Overcoming blocks in learning

There are numerous reasons that can affect learning. These are call blocks of learning.

Students that feel hopeless in their academic pursuit, generally have low self-esteems. They do not expect themselves to ever do well enough in their studies. This low level in personal confidence will lead to blocks in their quest for knowledge.

A student that is used to a previous teaching methodology may find a new one difficult to accept. An unpleasant and negative experience in previous lessons, may also lead to the student resistance to new learning. One solution for this issue is to ensure a good teacher and student relationship.

Students lacking motivation or interest in the subject will also affect learning greatly. Teachers must be careful to nurture their students’ interest and not just shoving concepts and exercises to the students till they are highly stressed out. Quantity in school worksheets does not mean quality in student’s work. Sadly in the Singapore scenario, many parents chose quantity thinking that it will lead to quality. Some parents even felt that fun is taboo in serious learning. They immediately conclude that their children are not learning when they are having fun in class.

A well experienced teacher can help students to study effectively. Teachers with ability to see individual student’s capabilities and adjust the lessons accordingly provide a smooth learning experience. It cannot be a one size fits all system as there are students with different learning styles.

Other factors that add to learning blocks are size of the class and the arrangement of seats. A class size of between 35 to 40 is too large for conducive learning. There will be too many noise and distraction. A smaller class size of between 8 to 12 allows for good communication. The arrangement of seats is important for interaction to take place. An arrangement whereby all students and teacher are able to face each other and participate in discussions is beneficial to learning.
