Students need motivation too

In the working environment, motivation for employees is often practiced in order to achieve better results. However, it is seldom use by parents to motivate their own children to do better. Parents usually apply the “stick” method rather than the “carrot” way. Many parents in Singapore push their kids to keep them studying and ignoring signals that their children might be too stressed out. Sadly seeing the children being stressed equates to them studying. Unfortunately these parents are unable to believe that their child can enjoy the lessons and be happy whilst learning. Experts have shown that intrinsic factors are important to help produce desired results. These parents need to know how motivation works and how it be applied in their children’s education journey.

At Science Buddies, we are a strong advocate of motivation and have designed our programs specially to achieve this. We train our teachers to communicate closely with their students and develop strong relationship with them. Our teachers consistently show the students the cause and effect relationships of what results they can obtain when they put in certain efforts. Students experiencing the motivational exercises are convinced that when they put in a certain amount of efforts, they can receive their desired results.

Teachers continue to encourage students to evoke positive feelings rather than being overly critical. Students will be motivated when they feel they have achieved. Our teachers customize the level of the lesson according to the different capabilities of the students. This way, no student will feel insecure. When our teachers feel that the student can achieve more, they will be challenge in higher standards of exercises. This way, they can judge individual student’s proficiency better.

Some parents do not understand this idea and for them they want the questions to be very challenging and do not want them to be “too easy” regardless of their child’s proficiency level. The child feels frustrated when he is faced with extremely difficult questions that the whole exercise becomes de-motivating and counter-productive.

In order to make learning a wonderful and motivating experience, we carefully design all the activities in our program to let students enjoy studying and to gain confidence with their measured success.
