Helping children who find learning difficult with their studies
For many people, studying for exams is just a procedure. However, for children who find learning difficult, it posed as a real challenge.
We can play an important role in helping with good study techniques. Firstly, we need to establish what the reasons behind the children’s challenges are.
Many children are unable to identify what are the topics that they will be tested on. They think that the test will cover every topic. This will overwhelm them. Explain to the children that their teachers may give some tips on what topics are to be tested. This will help them focus on a more manageable area of study.
Help children to plan for their studies. Set out a time table that list topics to cover and also ensure there are time for revising as well. Ensure that all learning materials are available so that children do not have to break their study routine and go look for the missing items.
Introduce study tools like concept maps and mind maps to help children recall points.
Children like anything that is fun in nature. In order to help them remember, teach them to use a silly sentence whereby the first letter represents the same letter of the points that they are to remember.
If the child likes doodling, ask them to draw cartoon of what they learned to help them remember the facts
Many students, even the better ones make careless mistakes. You can help by listing out their common mistakes so that the students will remember to avoid them in future tests.
Introduce games in their studies. This can be done by giving them quizzes on the topics that they have studied. With simple game point rewards, like sweets the children will be excited and motivated.
Heap children with praises whenever they answer the questions correctly.
