Discipline in studying

It is important to be discipline when studying. Many students may be sitting down to study but they are distracted by many things and therefore not productive. Distractions can come in many forms such as talking to a friend over the phone, chatting on line, watching television, or surfing the internet for areas of interest and the social media. Such activities may be a good break from the routine but during the examination period it will cause much time wasting. Students with unsatisfactory academic results may be wondering why they spend a considerable amount of time “studying” but did not receive their expected results. They need to look for areas where they may have wandered off the main focus with many distractions.

A good technique is to plan a study schedule and stick to it diligently. For example, they will study intensively for one hour followed by a break of 10 minutes in between. Choosing a good location to study is equally important. Many students like to group together in fast food outlets to study. They do this even with MP3 players turn on. This form of study may not be effective as there are too many distractions around.

A place that is well lit and quiet is most conducive for intense study. Students can go to the library if they find that their home is not favorable.

The desk of study should also be large enough to place books, writing pads and stationery. When the table is too cramped, it will be ineffective for students to keep searching for things around.

A common distraction is the mobile phone. Whenever there are incoming calls or text messages, students tend stop their studying and answer to the calls and messages. This takes their focus away.

Studying with friends is good as it will allow some discussions and checking on some topics that you may not be familiar with. However, it is important again to note that all the friends must agree that they are there to study and not be waylaid with discussion about other social matters not connected to the subject of study.
